About this site
The Bible's Underlying Principles is a free question-and-answer library. It answers the questions people actually ask about the Bible by explaining the principles that run underneath the text.
What the answers are based on
Every answer quotes the Bible in the King James Version and explains it in the light of the Divine Principle, the teaching of Reverend Sun Myung Moon, together with his collected speeches.
Who was Sun Myung Moon?
Sun Myung Moon was born in 1920 in Sangsa-ri, a small farming village in what is now North Korea, into a family that had become Christian. At fifteen, while praying on a mountainside on Easter morning in 1935, he experienced Jesus calling him to complete the work of God's salvation on earth. He spent the following years in prayer and searching, and the answers he arrived at became the Divine Principle.
He studied electrical engineering in Seoul and at Waseda University in Japan, and under Japanese rule he was imprisoned and tortured for his part in the Korean independence movement. After the war he began teaching publicly in Pyongyang, until the communist authorities arrested him; he spent nearly three years in the Hungnam labor camp and was freed when United Nations forces advanced during the Korean War in 1950. He fled south as a refugee and in 1954 founded the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity in Seoul, publishing the Divine Principle as a book in 1966.
In 1960 he married Hak Ja Han; together they are known as the True Parents, and their marriage began the Holy Marriage Blessing tradition described in several answers on this site. From the early 1970s he worked mainly in the United States, holding large public rallies at Yankee Stadium and the Washington Monument in 1976 and founding organizations for peace, interreligious dialogue, education and media, including the Washington Times in 1982. He died on September 3, 2012, in Korea, at the age of 92.
