What is the Biblical view of gender roles?
The Biblical view of gender emphasizes both fundamental equality as image-bearers of God and distinct, complementary roles. This teaching clarifies that God's original ideal was harmonious partnership, not hierarchy. The Fall introduced selfishness, which distorted these roles. Restoration involves returning to God's ideal through love, mutual respect, and overcoming fallen nature, establishing God-centered families that fulfill His original purpose.
The Bible presents a multifaceted view of gender, affirming both fundamental equality and distinct roles. Genesis 1:27 states, "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." This verse establishes that both genders equally bear the "image of God," signifying inherent worth and spiritual parity. Galatians 3:28 further emphasizes this, proclaiming, "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." These verses highlight the spiritual equality of male and female before God.
However, other passages describe distinct roles, which some interpret as a hierarchical structure. For example, Ephesians 5:22-24 instructs, "Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church." Similarly, 1 Timothy 2:11-12 states, "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet." The tension between these concepts of equality and submission is clarified by understanding the post-Fall disruption. Genesis 3:16, after the Fall, declares to the woman, "Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." This reveals that "rule" became a consequence of sin, not God's original intention for harmonious partnership.
Divine Principle's Clarification: Original Ideal vs. Fallen Reality
The Divine Principle clarifies these biblical tensions by distinguishing between God's original ideal for male and female and the fallen reality that distorted it. It asserts that God created male and female as equal in value and dignity because God is both Father and Mother, while expressing masculine and feminine characteristics. This God-centered relationship is not about superiority but about distinct yet harmonizing attributes, reflecting God's own dual characteristics. Together, they are designed to actualize God's love, fulfilling the three blessings of individual perfection, family prosperity, and dominion over creation. A person who achieves individual perfection becomes a temple of God, living according to God's will and gaining divinity, having no desire to sin. This original ideal means that male and female were meant to be partners in God's happiness.
The Fall introduced selfishness, which led to dominion and control rather than love and true leadership, causing human beings to fall into a love relationship with Satan. Therefore, the command-based "submission" and hierarchical "rule" in some biblical passages are adaptations to a fallen world, not reflections of God's original ideal. The original husband was meant to be a loving leader who deeply cherishes his wife, prioritizing her growth, much like Christ loves the Church. The wife's "submission" was meant to be a spontaneous, joyful response to a husband's God-centered love, rooted in trust and mutual respect, aligning with 1 Peter 3:7, which admonishes husbands to "be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as co-heirs with you of the gracious gift of life."
Restoration to God's Ideal Love
God's providence aims for the restoration of humanity to its original state of perfection, embodying true love centered on God. This means recovering the original ideal of gender roles—one of equal partnership, mutual respect, and harmonious co-creation. This restoration follows the "Principle of Restoration through Indemnity," which involves separating from Satan and establishing conditions of love and faith with God. The Fall occurred as a couple, and restoration, therefore, happens spiritually and physically through a couple, bestowed through the Holy Marriage Blessing. Before the Fall, Adam and Eve would have achieved perfection and become one in heart with God. After the Fall, humanity stands in a midway position between God and Satan, making it our responsibility to choose good to move toward God.
Jesus' teachings, which call for the restoration of the "beginning" (Matthew 19:4-6, "Haven’t you read that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?") clearly point to this lost ideal. The ultimate goal is a God-centered God-centered partnership where distinct attributes are celebrated and integrated through love, establishing ideal families that reflect God's perfect love. This ideal world will be a worldwide family centered on God, characterized by interdependence, mutual prosperity, and universally shared values, establishing God's sovereignty.
Living the Principle
Cultivating God-centered relationships requires active effort to embody God's original ideal for male and female relationships.
1. Develop God-centered character: Strive to achieve individual perfection and become a partner in God's happiness, reflecting Christ's servant leadership (Mark 10:45). 2. Practice mutual respect: In marriage, seek true equal partnership by submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ (Ephesians 5:21), valuing opinions and sharing responsibilities. 3. Overcome fallen nature: Engage in conditions of indemnity to shed selfishness, lust, greed, and anger, replacing them with goodness, sacrifice, charity, and compassion to separate from Satan. 4. Embrace God's perspective: Love others from God's point of view, respecting those in positions closer to God, receiving good words, and multiplying goodness.
